Fraud Prevention

Gwirio can verify the facts behind a transaction

Fraud increasingly involves people, accounts, devices and transactions that may appear legitimate when considered individually.

Gwirio provides access to verified data points from authoritative sources that organisations can use to identify potential fraud and make better risk decisions.

These data points can include identity, accounts, mobile devices, location, transactions and other relevant events or relationships.

Gwirio enables an organisation to ask a specific question and obtain a trusted answer from the organisation that is best placed to answer it — without necessarily exposing the underlying personal information.

Why

Many organisations already have sophisticated fraud and risk systems. The problem is that important information needed to make a decision is often held by someone else.

SABRIC recorded R2.7 billion in confirmed financial crime losses in South Africa during 2024.

This page does not claim a specific fraud-reduction outcome for any Gwirio deployment. It describes a proposed application of Trust Infrastructure, drawing on published fraud statistics and existing GSMA and banking material.

A bank may know the customer's transaction history but not whether their SIM was recently changed.

An MNO may know what has happened to a mobile number but not whether a transaction is consistent with the customer's banking relationship.

A social platform may know whether an account has been associated with a verified person, while another platform may have no reliable way to establish that relationship.

Organisations often address these gaps by collecting more information, building integrations and creating copies of data in their own systems.

This adds cost and complexity, increases the amount of personal information they hold, and does not necessarily provide greater confidence in the decision.

Gwirio provides a different approach:

Ask the organisation that knows→receive a trusted answer→use it in the decision

What Gwirio can verify

Gwirio can provide verified data points relating to:

Identity

Is this person who they claim to be?

Account

Is this an established customer or account relationship?

Mobile device

Is this device or mobile number associated with the person or account?

Location

Can a relevant location or presence be verified?

Events

Did a particular event occur, such as a recent SIM change?

Relationships

Is there a verified relationship between a person, account, device or organisation?

These individual data points can also be combined. Where multiple independently verified certificates relate to the same person, account or device, Gwirio can use that evidence to establish a stronger trust assessment.

How it works

A question is asked
An organisation identifies information that could improve a particular fraud or risk decision.
↓
The appropriate source verifies it
Gwirio obtains the relevant confirmation from an organisation that is authoritative for that information.
↓
A trusted answer is provided
The organisation receives the verified result it needs rather than necessarily receiving the underlying personal information.
↓
The existing decision process uses it
The trusted result can be incorporated into the organisation's existing fraud, risk or transaction systems.
Question→Authoritative source→Verified answer→Risk decision

Gwirio does not need to replace an organisation's existing fraud engine.

It provides additional trusted information for the decisions that system already makes.

What value does this provide?

Better risk decisions

Give fraud and risk systems access to information they cannot reliably establish themselves.

Less unnecessary data

Obtain confirmation of a relevant fact without automatically acquiring and storing the underlying personal information.

Less duplication

Reduce the need for multiple organisations to independently collect and verify the same information.

Faster decisions

Make relevant verified information available when a transaction or other decision is being made.

Stronger evidence

Provide evidence of the information that was relied upon when a risk decision was made.

Greater protection against fraud

Make it harder for fraudulent activity to succeed when identity, account, device and other relevant facts can be independently verified.

Where it can be used

Banking and payments

Verify additional facts before approving a transaction or other high-risk activity.

Mobile fraud

Use trusted information about SIM changes, mobile numbers and devices as part of existing fraud decisions.

Account takeover

Combine identity, account and device information to establish whether activity is consistent with an established relationship.

Social platforms

Allow a platform or another authorised organisation to establish whether an account is associated with a verified person.

Marketplaces and auctions

Verify buyers and sellers and reduce the opportunity for anonymous or fraudulent transactions.

Digital commerce

Use trusted information about customers, accounts, devices and transactions to strengthen online risk decisions.

Start with a real problem

Gwirio is open to working with organisations that have a specific fraud or risk problem where information from another authoritative source could improve the decision.

A pilot can identify:

  • the decision being made;
  • the information that would improve it;
  • the organisation that can verify that information;
  • the trusted answer required;
  • how the answer can be incorporated into the existing process; and
  • how the result will be measured.

The objective is not to assume that Gwirio will reduce fraud.

The objective is to demonstrate whether verified information can improve a real decision.
