Every generation builds the infrastructure its economy requires.

We built railroads and roads to move goods.

We built power grids to distribute electricity.

We built telecommunications networks to connect people.

We built the Internet to exchange information.

We built cloud computing to make technology available on demand.

We are building datacentres for AI.

We are not yet building the trust infrastructure AI will depend on.

Each became infrastructure when the problem became too important for every organisation to solve independently.

Trust is reaching that point.

Throughout this series I've argued that trust is not simply a security problem, a privacy problem or a compliance problem. It is becoming an economic problem that limits the value of trust, increases risk and stifles economic activity.

Every organisation still verifies the same identities. Checks the same authority. Collects the same evidence. Makes the same decisions. Then the next organisation repeats the work.

The cost is measured in fraud, delay, duplication and unnecessary disclosure of personal information.

It doesn't have to work that way.

Trust decisions can become explicit. Authoritative organisations can establish trusted outcomes and those outcomes can be reused under appropriate governance.

Verification can replace unnecessary disclosure.

People and AI systems can make better decisions because they begin with trusted information rather than rebuilding trust from scratch.

That is what infrastructure has always done.

It transforms thousands of isolated activities into a shared capability that benefits everyone.

I believe trust is becoming the next foundational layer of the digital economy.

Not because technology demands it but because the economy increasingly depends on it.

The digital economy was built on data.

The trust economy will be built on verifiable trust.

Trust precedes transaction.
